CARMEN
by Georges Bizet

These are versions of Bizet's famous opera where a soldier falls in love with a beautiful factory worker. Set in the sun-scorched city of Seville.

The one on the right is an exciting Carmen, with a young-looking Placido Domingo in top form for a role he has sung hundreds of times.
For Julia Migenes, though, it was her first performance in this role. Casting her in the role was a gamble, but it worked; she is a convincing actress. Unlike most opera-house performances this movie version uses the opera's original opera comique form with some spoken dialogue rather than recitatives.

This is the Film Version 1984

On the left is a grand-scale production with a large cast of 80, beautifully staged and with an extra 10 minutes flamenco dance. Maria Ewing combines great singing with powerful acting.

Her Carmen is vivid, sensual and full of passion.
