Charlie Pride
March 18th, 1938 - Mississippi, USA
Charley Pride was born on a cotton farm and listened and played what he
heard on the radio with a cheap guitar, and preferred country music to the blues.
He played professional baseball but turned to music when he was told that he was not
really good enough.
He was introduced to Chet Atkins at RCA Records where he
recorded
The Snakes Crawl At Night, which was followed by
Between You And Me which won a Grammy for the best country record by a
male performer.
In 1967 he was introduced at the Grand Ole Opry.
Charley Pride has had 29 number 1 records on the US country charts.
His most significant recordings include
Is Anybody Goin' To San Antone?,, and
Crystal Chandelier,.
His biggest single in America was
Kiss An Angel Good Mornin',.
During the 1980s, Charley Pride was disappointed at
the way RCA was promoting "New Country" in preference to established performers so he left
the label.
Records such as
I'm Gonna Love Her On The Radio, and
Amy's Eyes,
continued his brand of easy-listening country, but could not recapture his sales of the late 1960s.
Charley Pride has had a long and contented family life and his son, Dion,
plays in his band.
Seeing him perform in concert shows what a good voice he has and in 1994 he received the
Academy Of Country Music's Pioneer Award.
